EDF to drive the sustainable vision for the Amaala project

Red Sea Global has entered a 25-year public-private partnership with EDF and Masdar to design, build, and operate the power and water infrastructure for Amaala, a luxury resort on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast. This off-grid, carbon-free destination will operate entirely on solar power, saving nearly half a million tons of CO2 annually. The eco-friendly infrastructure includes renewable energy systems capable of providing clean power and sustainable water, generating 410,000 MWh per year; enough to power 10,000 households. A 700 MWh battery storage facility ensures 24/7 power, while a water desalination plant produces 37 million liters daily. This commitment aligns with Amaala's support for the country's Vision 2030 Strategy.

Manah 1: EDF Renewables' first utility-scale solar project in Oman

EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power Corporation (KOWEPO) have achieved financial close on the Manah 1 solar project in Oman. This 500 MW utility-scale photovoltaic solar power plant is located approximately 120 kilometers south of Muscat. Construction began in May, and the plant is expected to commence commercial operations in the first quarter of 2025.

Manah 1 is the first large-scale renewable installation in Oman for EDF Renewables and KOWEPO. The project aligns with Oman's Clean Energy Goals, aiming for thirty-nine percent renewable generation by 2040. The financing involves a combination of equity and loans from global financial institutions, including the Korea Export-Import Bank, French Société Générale Bank, and Bank Muscat.

Upon completion, Manah 1 will power over 50,000 Omani households, offsetting more than 700,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. The plant features over 1,000,000 bifacial PV panels and single-axis trackers.

Al Henakiyah will be one of the largest solar plants in the world

The consortium EDF Renewables, Masdar, and Nesma Company have signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) to develop, build, and operate the 1,100 MW Al Henakiyah Solar Plant after submitting the lowest bid. The project, located in Al Madinah province, will be one of the planet's largest single-site solar plants. When it becomes operational, it is expected to power over 190,000 homes per year and displace over 1.8 million tons of CO2 annually.

In alignment with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan, the project aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the country's energy mix to approximately 50 percent by 2030. The initiative will also contribute to the local economy, with at least 19 percent of the project's equipment, materials, and services sourced from Saudi companies during the construction phase.

DEWA III Solar plant in Dubai

DEWA III Solar plant powers 160,000 residences in Dubai

EDF Renewables took part in the construction of the DEWA III Solar plant with our partners: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and MASDAR and brought DEWA III under operation in 2020. With an 1065 MWp capacity, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar plant is the largest in the world, by the time of its commissioning. By 2030, its capacity is due to reach 5,000 MWp which will save over 6.5 million tons of carbon emissions annually. This project has a positive social impact and created more than 1,000 jobs during its development. Today, fully commissioned DEWA III powers with clean energy 160,000 residences in Dubai.

Dumat Al Jandal wind farm: largest wind farm middle east

The largest and most powerful wind farm in the Middle East

The 400-megawatt (MW) utility-scale project Dumat Al Jandal is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s first wind farm and the largest in the Middle East. It is being developed by a consortium led by EDF Renewables, Masdar and Nesma Company, the world’s leading renewable energy companies. The installation of the first turbines began in August 2020 on the site, located 900km North of Riyadh, in the Al Jouf region of Saudi Arabia. The wind farm comprises 99 wind turbines, each with a power output of 4.2MW. The wind farm is fully operational and produces clean and renewable energy for powering 70,000 Saudi households.

Al Dhafra solar park

Al Dhafra: the largest single-site solar power plant in the world

In 2020, EDF Renewables began the construction of Al Dhafra photovoltaic project. The solar power plant is located in Al Dhafra region, 35km South of Abu Dhabi. With an installed capacity of 2.1GWp, Al Dhafra is the most powerful single-site solar park in the world and powers 160,000 local households with clean electricity every year. It is the first power plant of this scale to use bifacial modules and sun-trackers, optimizing considerably the energy generation.

EDF Renewables and Masdar building solar power plant in Jeddah KSA

South Jeddah: EDF Renewables commissioned its first solar park in KSA

A consortium led by EDF Renewables and Masdar, both global leaders in renewable energy, and Nesma Company (KSA), has been awarded in 2021 to design, finance, build and operate the 388-megawatt (MWp) utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) power plant located in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The plant is fully commissioned and produces clean electricity to power 45,000 local households.

EDF in the Middle East: solar park plant

Benban, a 130MW solar park in Egypt

EDF Renewables and the ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC Group commissioned two solar power plants in Benban (Egypt) with a total installed capacity of 130MW. These photovoltaic projects jointly owned by the partners hold a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).

The solar power plants, with 65MW installed capacity each are located in the Aswan province of southern Egypt. They form an integral part of the Benban solar complex, which will soon have capacity totaling close to 1,800MW.

Offering our unique expertise to support DEWA hydropower plant

EDF is playing a key role in the construction of the first pumped storage-type hydroelectric power plant in the Arabian Gulf, through a consultancy contract signed with DEWA in 2017. With six hydroelectric power plants of its kind in our portfolio in France, EDF offers DEWA a unique expertise from design, hydrogeological and environmental impact studies, to construction site monitoring. The pumped-storage hydropower facilities are able to function as an energy storage and can, therefore, be used to meet consumption peaks and ease the integration of the intermittent renewable energies. The facility is located in the mountainous enclave of Hatta, on the border between the UAE and Oman, and while completed will have a 250MW power capacity.
